La Guajira Peninsula – the land where the wind never stops – has some of the most amazing undiscovered kite spots in the world. Its empty beaches bordering a spectacular desert offer some truly unique locations to learn water sports.
Kite Center Eoletto operates in a variety of kiteboarding and windsurfing spots, with water and wind conditions that fit all levels and preferences. Some are within a short drive from Riohacha, some are a bit further away, so you can optimize your time depending on how many days you have in La Guajira.
Let our experienced instructors recommend you the best location based on the local wind conditions and your level.

Mayapo
Season: From December to April (strong wind most of the time) May to August between 18-22 Knots. Average in season: Usually between 20 and 30 knots. Off season: October and November (rainy time, less days of wind). From Riohacha: Around 35 minutes by car.
MAYAPO General wind conditions
In this untouched village near Riohacha you will find a very nice and endless beach, with some restaurants and bars to chill. Best wind we have from December to April 7 or 8 squad meter kite could be ok (75-80 kg kiter). The rest of the year 9 to 12 are normally used. It´s open see, so there is a shore brake. Not really difficult but sometimes a bit uncomfortable for beginners to pass. If it rains enough between September and November, half of the year, from November to June, there is a lagoon with salty water. We love to ride and teach there. It’s a very big place, with totally shallow water and no waves. In the deepest point the water comes up to your hips. The ground is a bit muddy but for learning kite or some new tricks it’s perfect. So come and enjoy the virgin and empty Mayapo beach.
Take care
There is a side shore current, so when you’re going upwind you also have to go against this. September is the start of the rainy season. That brings the wind down and sometimes it’s impossible to reach the spot even with a 4x4 van. For downwinds always depart early as the wind can change or slow down.
Eoletto offer in Mayapo
Kite & windsurf courses, equipment rental, kite caddy and help with transportation.
Food and accommodation
There are some places to eat a basic meal, always fresh fish, but it’s also a good idea to bring a picnic lunch. To sleep you can find some basic options to hang a hammock or rent a basic cabin. Most of our clients sleep in Riohacha and enjoy the city facilities.

RIOHACHA
White sand and palm trees on the beach, live the true Caribbean lifestyle. Season: From December to May (strong wind most of the time). Average in season: Usually between 20 and 28 knots. Off season: October and November (rainy time, less days of wind).
RIOHACHA General wind conditions
In Riohacha generally in the afternoon from 2 to 3 pm the wind turns to a side – on shore and picks up. December to May are the months with the highest wind guarantee. Here we mostly use 8 to 10 m/2 kites. The rest of the year you will need bigger ones. Once you have passed the shore brake it’s easy to get on the board. There is a 20 / 30m beach strip to stay on ground. In the morning the wind is offshore and quite gusty. However there are many days when you can ride.
Take care
There is no current that pulls you out, as the current always streams along the shore. This means you have to be careful with the sea wall that breaks the waves and goes straight in the sea. More to the east (700 to 1000m) after the river there are no obstacles and riding gets much safer.

Food and accommodation
As the capital of La Guajira department, Riohacha has a lot of restaurants for all tastes and accommodation for all budget levels, from high end hotels to budget hostels. It also boasts lots of entertainment and shopping opportunities at the two commercial centers in the city.
Cabo de la Vela
Season: From December to September (strong wind most of the time). Average in season: Usually between 25 and 35 knots. Off season: October and November (rainy time, less days of wind). From Riohacha: Around 6 hours (public transport).
CABO DE LA VELA General wind conditions
Cabo de la Vela has a secluded bay with flat water; the wind starts in the morning from south east and is very gusty, then around noon it turns to north east, becomes much stronger and is ideal for learning. Close to shore the sea is totally calm and you find a huge location with shallow water. 150-200 meters offshore a choppy area starts. Just in front the spot there is a sign that indicates the "kite area" where the practice of sailing sports is allowed. In October - November the rain not only affects the wind, but the trails that cross the desert, making it difficult to reach.
Take care
There is a big bank of sea grass in front of the spot, home to lots of animals (stingrays, sea urchins, etc.) so you have to be careful not to crash or step in this area (we provide shoes to our students). Also, make sure you kite away from other riders, as most of the locals don’t know the basic sailing rules. Use a lycra t-shirt and long pants against the jellyfish.
Eoletto in Cabo de la Vela, since 1999
Eoletto has been working on this spot since 1999 with groups of sailors, campers, kite and windsurfing clients, either on a visiting basis or with a fixed center for some years. We now provide our services in association with locals, who offer various amenities for our clients. We make sure our partners meet with certain quality standards. Eoletto Kite Center in Cabo de la Vela offers kite courses, equipment rental and help with transportation and accommodation. SEE OUR PRICE LIST
Food and accommodation
The food in Cabo de la Vela is delicious, especially for those who appreciate seafood. Accommodation is basic, in hammocks or private cabins with beds. The village does not have water or electricity services, so some tips are recommended before you go there in order to make this trip a positive and safe experience. Contact or visit us for help.
Camarones
Season: From December to April (strong wind most of the time). Average in season: Usually between 15 and 25 knots. Off season: July to November (rainy time, less days of wind). From Riohacha: Around 30 minutes by car.
CAMARONES General wind conditions
About 20 km South West from Riohacha there’s a huge lagoon with brackish water, where the natives catch prawns. The beach is lined with coconut palms and lush vegetation at the end of the touristic attractions. The sailing is done in the open sea, where you find a big bay with shallow water and nice regular waves. From December to April the conditions are very good in the afternoon, with very stable side on shore winds. In the morning the wind is mostly side off shore and quite gusty.
Take care
There are some big sand banks, where the water is very shallow and places with banks of sharp oysters that can cut your feet. (ask the locals)

Food and accommodation, things to see
There are some basic hostels with cabins. To sleep there in a hammock you must have a mosquito net. It is a small fishing village that people from Riohacha usually visit on Sundays to spend a day at the beach and eat the typical dishes. We recomend the rice with shrimp. Camarones is one of the most popular places in the country to see flamingos. The locals offer a tour for $25.000 COP each – they bring you in a small sailing boat to the National Park where you can see these pink birds.
Punta Gallinas
Season: From December to September (strong wind most of the time). Average in season: Usually between 25 and 35 knots. Off season: October and November (rainy time, less days of wind). From Riohacha: Around 6 hours (public transport).
PUNTA GALLINAS General wind conditions
At the northernmost point of South America, in the middle of nowhere we find three beautiful spots.
There are 3 different spots in the area. First, the lagoon at 3 minutes by walking from the Luz Milla hostel. Here the water is very calm with site or offshore wind depending on where you start. Rescue boats are available. From here you can make a down wind to the second spot, to the “Boquita”. There you are in the open sea. Kiting the channel is only for very advanced kiters but you can reach the sea easily after a 100m downwind walk. Boats are also available. The third spot is in front of the dunes. You can only get here by car. Good 1 to 1,5m waves and nice stable side shore wind all year-long. Strong kites from 6 to 9m are normally used.
Take care
If you want to kite at the dunes, it’s better not to go alone. The next rescue boat is very far. The channel is about 50m wide. The borders are 5 to 10 meters high mangroves on the left and 10 to 15 meters high rocks on the side. You go straight down wind. It’s very difficult.
Eoletto offer in Punta Gallinas
Trips to riders, caddy service, kite courses, equipment rental and help with transportation and accommodation. See kite trips here.
Food and accommodation
Luz Milla y Alessandra are two huge rancherias (a type of typical hotel), each with place for 150 to 200 persons. You can find cabins with private bathrooms and there is always the option to sleep in a chinchorro. In the very high season (New Year and Easter) some families in the area also offer accommodation. The regular dish is generally fresh fish and sometimes meat. You have to try the lobster.
ACCOMODATION IN GUAJIRA SPOTS
In La Guajira, in desert accommodations and rancherias it is normal to sleep in chinchorros (a large, wide and comfortable woven hammock traditionally used by indigenous people); we recommend trying them as part of the travel experience. In Punta Gallinas, Mayapo, Camarones and Cabo de la Vela there is also the option of basic cabins with private bathrooms. In Riohacha there is a wide range of hotels, hostels and apartment rentals. Just ask us and according to your budget we help you choose and reserve the best option with Eoletto´s partnerships.
