How to Get to Mayapo from Cartagena

Mayapo is one of the most accessible kite spots in La Guajira. Located just 32 kilometers from Riohacha—the gateway to Colombia’s northern desert—it can be reached via a paved road, making it much easier to access than more remote destinations such as Cabo de la Vela or Punta Gallinas.

For travelers coming from Cartagena, however, the journey requires some planning. Below is a clear overview of the different ways to get there, depending on your budget, available time, and travel style.

Keeping this in mind, there are several ways to travel from Cartagena to Mayapo, each suited to different budgets, schedules, and holiday plans.

The most efficient way to reach Mayapo is by flying to Riohacha. Airlines such as AVIANCA and LATAM operate daily flights from major cities like Bogotá and Medellín.

Once in Riohacha, you are only about 30 minutes away from Mayapo by road. Taxis, private transfers, or shuttle services can take you directly to the beach.

Best for: travelers short on time or looking for comfort.

If you prefer traveling overland, the journey from Cartagena to Riohacha (Ruta Nacional 90) is longer but offers a more immersive experience of Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

Buses run between Cartagena and Riohacha, usually via Santa Marta service by Expreso Brasilia or Copetran. The journey can take between 8 and 12 hours depending on connections and traffic.

This is the most economical option, although not the fastest.

Make sure the bus doesn’t take the route through Valledupar, which adds several hours to the trip.

Hiring a private car or transfer is significantly faster and more comfortable. Travel time is usually around 6 to 8 hours, depending on stops along the way. They pick you up in your Cartagena hostel.

Best for: groups or travelers with own kite gear who value flexibility and comfort.

Once you arrive in Riohacha, getting to Mayapo is straightforward:
